Introduction

Updated August 2009 (This section will not change)

Two years ago the Beechwood Board of Education decided on several top-priority facilities projects to enhance the academic and athletic experiences of Beechwood students while maintaining Beechwood’s culture and architectural heritage.  The reasons that led the Board to the inescapable conclusion to proceed cautiously and prudently to make facility improvements without jeopardizing Beechwood’s financial condition include: the nine percent increase in student enrollment during the past five years, the necessity to rejuvenate facilities and grounds, and the need to upgrade certain athletic facilities that often impact on the health and well-being of our students and the Ft. Mitchell community through recreational offerings.

Some of the projects the Board of Education have completed during the 2008-2009 school year include: renovating and air-conditioning the gymnasium, renovating the baseball/softball fields, renovating the basketball locker rooms, and replacing the antiquated sound system for the football field, Commons, and gymnasium.

Starting construction of the first phase of the new three-level elementary school brick building (two-thirds of which is above ground) is scheduled to break ground in August 2009 and be ready for occupancy by August 2010.  This first phase was to include 8 classrooms, administrative offices, an elevator, restrooms and a mechanical room; however, the bids came in lower than expected and additional construction will occur. Read below for information related to construction projects.

Many have questioned - will we be tearing down the old elementary school building with this new construction - The answer is NO.

Lead Hazard Information for Parents

Updated  May 18, 2010 (This section will not change)

Since the Beechwood Elementary School was constructed before 1978, Beechwood hired Air Source Technology, Inc. (ASTI) to inspect, collect, and analyze for lead hazards in specific locations due to be renovated this summer. The areas inspected included the hallway outside room 108, rooms (108, 109, 101 and 212), and the nearby stairwell rails and risers. The information collected by ASTI was forwarded to Environmental Hazards Services Laboratories (EHSL) for analysis and analyzed in accordance to EPA’s SW846-7420 analytical method. EHSL is certified by the American Industrial Hygiene Association.  ASTI / EHSL reported these construction areas are LEAD FREE.

Nevertheless, federal law requires that general renovation lead hazard information must be provided to both the operator of child care facilities and schools built before 1978, and the families of children attending these facilities. A copy of the Environmental Protection Agency's pamphlet on this subject matter is included on this website (see Related Files section at the bottom of this website).

Site Access Improvements (new parking lot)
Updated August 12, 2009 (This section will not change)

The purpose of this project is to:

(1) Reconfigure and expand the parking lot to help alleviate the reduction of available parking spaces that will occur from the elementary school construction.

(2) Improve the traffic flow into and out of the campus to enhance student safety.  The current entrance/exit lane will be separated so students will no longer cross in front of the incoming and outgoing traffic.  The current entrance/exit will become exit only.

Elementary School Addition Bid Results

Updated August 9, 2009 (This section will not change)

We have received final approval from the Kentucky Department of Education to begin construction of the first phase of the new three-level elementary school addition. Originally, this first addition was to include 8 classrooms, administrative offices, an elevator, restrooms and a mechanical room.  However, Great News !!!!  The construction bids for the elementary school addition came in under budget.  As a result, the Beechwood Board of Education unanimously approved a motion on July 13, 2009 to accept the architect’s recommendation and award the elementary school addition project to Morel Construction for a total contract amount of $4,818,500.  Since the bids came in under budget, the project now includes the following:

  • Adding 3 elementary classrooms (11 new classrooms instead of 8).
  • Expanding the Commons seating area.  This will occur at the end of the school year
  • Adding additional parking behind the High School Science Wing
  • Re-paving the "old unusable tennis courts" which will ultimately be converted into a multi-purpose area (parking, band practice area, and potentially outdoor basketball courts).
  • Constructing a Band tower by the old tennis courts
  • Relocating the current Board of Education Office to the 2nd floor of the PNC building in the Krogers Plaza.

During the July 2009 Board meeting, the Board also decided not to ask for your vote on a tax levy to raise additional funds to meet its strategic objective of strengthening Beechwood’s academic and athletic facilities.  In fact, the last time Beechwood sought a tax levy was in 2000.  The above projects are moving forward because of funds previously set aside for facilities projects, and exercising our bond funding capacity.

Board of Education Office has Moved
Updated August 20, 2010 (This section will not change)

The Board of Education office relocated to the 2nd floor of the old Elementary School beginning with the 2010-11 school year. Our phone number remains the same (859.331.3250) and our address remains the same (50 Beechwood Road.  Fort Mitchell, KY 41017).  Office Hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Landscaping
Updated November 5, 2009

Prior to the October Board meeting, our Architect, Ehmet Hayes and Associates, hired a landscape architect (Egbers Land Design, Inc.) to draw up landscaping plans for the berm along Beechwood Road, above the retaining wall along the entrance, and in the islands in the middle of the parking lot.  The plans were advertised and eight companies submitted bids by the deadline of October 8.  At the October 2009 Board of Education meeting, the Board awarded the landscaping bid to Stone Creek Landscaping.

Stone Creek Landscaping installed landscaping on November 2nd and November 3rd.  Additional landscaping will occur as the elementary school construction moves along and comes to a completion.

New Parking Lot
Updated November 11, 2009

Stone Creek installed landscaping on the berm along Beechwood Road, the islands in the middle of the new parking lot, and above the retaining wall along the entrance way on November 2nd and 3rd.

On Saturday November 7, Michels Construction added another layer of asphalt and restriped the lot where the three houses once stood.

When the new elementary school addition is complete, a fresh layer of asphalt will be installed on the remaining portion of the big parking lot.

Parking behind the Science Wing
Updated August 20, 2010

Adding 35 additional parking spaces behind the Science Wing on Ashton Road is now complete.  Until further notice, this parking lot has been designated for high school faculty parking only.

Electronic Baseball / Soccer Scoreboard
Updated September 18, 2009

Installation of the electronic baseball / soccer scoreboard was installed during the week of September 7, 2009.  We hope to run electric from the back of the Science Wing to the scoreboard before baseball season. In the meantime, an extension cord can be used to power the scoreboard.

Band Tower and Tennis Courts
Updated August 20, 2010

Band parents often quote, "We have Vince" and now the rest of us know why.  Beechwood parent Vince Michels constructed the Band tower and Band practice field for Beechwood Schools and what a remarkable job he did.  The 20 foot band tower is located in the center of the band practice field where the old tennis courts were located.  The old unusalbe tennis courts were excavated and the area now serves as a parking lot for seniors during the day and it serves as a permanent band practice field after 3:30 pm.

Beechwood will receive three new tennis courts up on the hill toward the end of Krogers after Krogers rebuilds.  It is estimated that Beechwood will receive these tennis courts in 2011.

Be Patient – Dirt, Noise, Parking Issues, and Traffic Congestion will Occur

Updated August 2009 (This section will not change)

KEEP your EYE on the PRIZE: This is a major construction project and we will experience it all (dirt, dust, noise, parking issues, and traffic congestion).  Please be patient (all year)!  We will work together and we’ll get through all of the inconveniences to celebrate the opening of the new elementary school addition by the next school year (our 150 year anniversary).  As mentioned earlier, we will use E-News and this website to keep parents updated on the facility activities related to all construction projects that will occur this school year.  Therefore, we suggest you sign up for E-News today.

Student Parking, Drop Off, and Pickup
Updated August 20, 2010

The Expressway Plaza notified Beechwood Schools that the gate between their property and Beechwood Schools must remain locked for security and liability purposes.  Therefore, parents cannot park at Krogers and walk their children to Beechwood Schools.

A new Traffic Flow Patter for August 20, 2010 is located at the bottom of this page.

Parking Passes

Updated August 20, 2010

All faculty will be required to have parking passes to park in Beechwood's lot.

All students parking off site or eventually onsite, will need a parking pass (obtain from the HS Office)

Construction workers will have a designated parking area between the football field and the construction site.

Students may continue to park at an alternate site (Beechwood Swim Club, or the Fort Mitchell Baptist Church).

Visitors may park onsite.  Seniors may park onsite in a designated area by the football concession stand with permission from the high school office.
